Devotions on Discipleship (Page 2)

Reading the Word

2 Timothy 3:16-17 Last week, we saw some of the spiritual disadvantages of being alone but there are advantages also. One very profitable thing we can do with our time alone is to read the Bible – to allow God to speak to us through His Word.

The Heights of the Earth

Isaiah 58:13-14 We consider one final application of the fourth commandment and then the blessing the Lord promises to give us if we keep His Day holy.

Our Undivided Attention

Isaiah 58:13-14 The Lord wants our undivided attention on the Lord’s Day, which is why we need to separate ourselves from the world entirely – not only from our normal work, but also from worldly recreations and thoughts and words about that recreation and work.

Merciful and Necessary Works

Matthew 12:1-14 Having seen that we must do no work on the Sabbath, we examine two kinds of work we may do on the Lord’s Day: merciful and necessary work. These exceptions are clearly taught in the Scriptures. We consider modern-day out-workings of this principle.

Sabbath Rest

Exodus 20:8-11 We see: * We are to do no work on the Lord’s Day (we will consider some exceptions in our next message in this series) * Neither are we to cause others to do unnecessary work

Walking with God on the Lord’s Day

Hebrews 4:9-10 We begin to consider the subject of the Christian Sabbath. We start by reviewing some of the Biblical and other data that show there is still a day of rest for the believer, designed by God to be a blessing for His children.

Walking with God through Fasting, Part 4

Matthew 6:16-18 We finish considering the topic of fasting by looking at some directions on how to keep a fast that is honoring to the Lord. We see two things: #The things we need to consider before we begin a fast. #What we need to do during a fast.
